Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan

An abdominal and pelvic CT scan (also called an abdomen and pelvis CT scan or an abdominopelvic CT scan) is an imaging test that uses X-rays and computer technology to obtain detailed images of the abdomen and pelvis.

It is a quick, safe and painless test, very useful to investigate abdominal/pelvic pain, inflammation/infections, tumours and various other abnormalities.

What is an Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan and what is it for?

An abdominal and pelvic CT scan allows the observation, in a single assessment, of structures such as the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, intestines, bladder, blood vessels and lymph nodes, as well as pelvic organs (for example, the uterus and ovaries, or the prostate).

It is often requested when an overall view of the abdomen and pelvis is needed, in an emergency setting (for example, acute pain) or for the investigation/follow-up of disease.

What is the price of an Abdominal and Pelvic CT scan?

The price of an Abdominal and Pelvic CT scan when performed privately is €240.

However, you may undergo this CT scan through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When the Abdominal and Pelvic CT scan is carried out through the National Health Service (SNS), the patient does not pay any amount (it is necessary to bring a prescription from the Health Centre);

  • ADSE: If this CT scan is performed under ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €32 (€16 each);

  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;

  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, and other insurance companies;

  • Health plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, and other health plans;

  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. In the case of the Abdominal and Pelvic CT scan, the price under the protocol is €160 (€80 each).

How is it performed?

The CT scan is performed with the patient lying on a table (bed) that slides into the scanner. Depending on the clinical indication, the abdominal and pelvic CT scan may be performed without contrast or with contrast (intravenous and, in some situations, oral). The exam takes, on average, 10 to 20 minutes.

NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan

What does it detect?

An abdominal and pelvic CT scan can help identify, among other situations:

  • Common causes of abdominal/pelvic pain (e.g., appendicitis, diverticulitis);
  • Infections and abscesses;
  • Stones (kidneys/ureters/bladder) and obstructions;
  • Inflammatory disease (digestive, urinary, gynaecological);
  • Tumours and assessment of extent (staging) and response to treatment;
  • Vascular changes and trauma-related findings.

In which cases is it indicated?

A CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis may be recommended by your doctor in situations such as:

  • Persistent, intense, or unexplained abdominal/pelvic pain;
  • Suspected appendicitis, diverticulitis, pancreatitis, infection/abscess, or inflammatory complications;
  • Assessment of haematuria, renal colic, and other urological complaints;
  • Investigation, staging and follow-up of oncological disease;
  • Assessment after trauma or suspected internal bleeding;
  • Pre-operative planning and post-operative follow-up.

Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan with Contrast

When indicated, intravenous iodinated contrast may be used to improve the visualisation of blood vessels and better characterise certain lesions. During the injection, it is relatively common to feel a transient warm sensation and/or a metallic taste.

In specific cases, oral contrast may also be required (for better assessment of the digestive tract). In these situations, you may be asked to arrive 1 to 2 hours earlier for preparation.

Before the exam, always inform the team if:

  • You have previously had a reaction to contrast;
  • You have asthma or significant allergies;
  • You have kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension or other relevant conditions;
  • You are pregnant or there is a possibility you may be pregnant.

Preparation for an Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan

Topic Guidance
Exam prescription (paper copy) You must bring the exam prescription in paper format.
Fasting If the exam will be performed with contrast, you should fast for 4 hours. If the exam is performed without contrast, fasting is not necessary.
Arriving early Generally, you only need to arrive 15 minutes before the exam, except in cases where oral contrast will be used. In this case, you should arrive 1 to 2 hours before the exam (you will be informed at the time of booking).
Previous exams Bring any relevant previous exams.
Previous medical history Be aware of your previous medical history regarding allergies, cardio-respiratory and kidney diseases, and your usual medication.
Water If necessary or if you wish, you may drink water.

NRD will provide you with all instructions at the time of booking.

Instructions during the exam

To ensure the best image quality and that the exam is completed quickly, it is important to:

  • Remain still during image acquisition to avoid artefacts in the images;
  • Follow the technologist’s instructions, who may ask for small position adjustments and, when necessary, to hold your breath for a few seconds.

When and how do you receive the results?

You will receive the CT results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or on paper at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take the CD with the images with you.

Where to have it done?

The abdominal and pelvic CT scan can be performed at NRD, at the following address:

Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, ground floor, 1070–060 Lisbon (near Praça de Espanha).

Does an Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan hurt?

No. A CT scan is completely painless.

Can an Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan be covered by the SNS?

Yes, the CT scan may be covered by the SNS, with a prescription and according to clinical criteria.

Can I have an Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan if I am pregnant?

During pregnancy, CT is generally avoided due to radiation and is only performed when there is significant clinical need. If you are pregnant (or suspect you may be), inform the team before the exam.

How long does the exam take?

On average, 10 to 20 minutes (image acquisition itself is usually only a few minutes).

Can I drink water before the CT scan?

In many cases, yes. If fasting is required because of contrast, the team will confirm with you what you can or cannot consume.

What are the contraindications for an Abdominal and Pelvic CT Scan?

A non-contrast CT scan has few absolute contraindications. Most limitations are related to the use of iodinated contrast and are assessed individually by the radiologist:

  • Pregnancy: radiation, even at low doses, may affect the foetus. CT is only performed in pregnant patients if absolutely necessary and when there is no safer alternative (such as ultrasound or MRI);
  • Allergy to iodinated contrast: patients with a history of severe reactions to iodinated contrast should avoid contrast-enhanced CT or follow specific protocols with preventive medication;
  • Kidney failure: iodinated contrast can place additional strain on the kidneys. In these cases, the doctor may request blood tests to assess kidney function before the exam;
  • Thyroid disease: the iodine in contrast may interfere with thyroid function in some patients;
  • Asthma or severe allergic disease: higher risk of contrast reactions, so it is important to inform the team;
  • Diabetes treated with metformin: there is a rare risk of complication (lactic acidosis) after contrast. It may be necessary to temporarily stop the medication, according to medical advice.
