Cranial CT scan (cranioencephalic) is a fast and highly effective imaging exam, used to assess the brain and the bony structures of the head. It is one of the most important techniques in medical emergency situations, such as suspected stroke or head trauma, but also in scheduled studies of neurological diseases.
What is a Cranial / Head CT scan and what is it for?
Cranial CT scan is a computed tomography exam that uses X-rays and digital technology to obtain detailed images of the brain, skull bones, cerebral ventricles and intracranial blood vessels. It allows rapid identification of structural changes or lesions that would not be visible on simple exams.
Cranial CT scan is considered the first-line exam in neurological emergencies due to its speed, reliability and high sensitivity in detecting intracranial haemorrhages.
How much does a Cranial CT scan cost?
The price of a Cranial CT scan when performed on a private basis is €120.
However, you may undergo a Cranial CT scan through several agreements, including:
- SNS / ARS: When a Cranial CT scan is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (you must bring the Health Centre prescription);
- ADSE: If the Cranial CT scan is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
- IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;

How is it performed?
Cranial CT scan is performed with the patient lying on a table that slides into the scanner. Transverse and multiplanar images are acquired, and it may be necessary to administer intravenous iodinated contrast in specific situations, such as in the study of tumours or infections. The exam lasts on average between 5 and 15 minutes.

What does it detect?
Cranial CT scan is an exam that can detect a number of changes in the brain and skull, such as:
- Intracranial haemorrhages, including subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracerebral haematomas;
- Signs of ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke;
- Brain tumours, cysts and metastases;
- Head trauma, skull fractures and associated lesions;
- Hydrocephalus and other changes in the cerebral ventricles;
- Intracranial infections, such as brain abscesses;
- Congenital or structural abnormalities of the skull and brain;
- Among others.
In which cases is it indicated?
Cranial CT scan is usually requested by the doctor in situations such as:
- Suspected acute stroke;
- Assessment of head trauma and its complications;
- Diagnosis or follow-up of brain tumours;
- Investigation of persistent, sudden or atypical headaches;
- Investigation of seizures or epileptic episodes;
- Investigation of neurological symptoms such as visual changes, motor or sensory deficits;
- Pre- and postoperative assessment in neurosurgery;
- Among others.
Cranial CT scan with Contrast
Head / Cranial CT scan can be performed with or without contrast, depending on the clinical situation. Intravenous contrast is generally used in cases of suspected tumours, infections, inflammation or for better vascular characterisation.
Injection of the contrast may cause a brief warm sensation or metallic taste, which quickly disappear. In these cases, fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).
It is essential to inform the team about any known allergies (to medicines, foods, etc.), asthma, allergic rhinitis or previous reactions to contrast agents, as these situations may increase the risk of adverse reactions.
Preparing for a Cranial CT scan

Instructions during the exam
- Remain still to avoid artefacts on the images;
- Remove jewellery, hair clips, glasses, hearing aids and dentures for this exam.
When and how do you receive the results?
You will receive the CT scan results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or in paper form at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take the CD with the images with you.
