Brain / Head MRI

Brain MRI is a highly accurate imaging exam that allows detailed assessment of the brain, meninges, intracranial vessels and adjacent bony structures. It is a non-invasive, radiation-free exam indicated in cases of neurological symptoms, tumours, vascular changes or inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system.

What is a Brain MRI?

Brain MRI is an exam that uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency waves to generate detailed images of the brain and surrounding structures. Because it does not use ionising radiation, it is a safe and effective option for diagnosing neurological conditions, infections, tumours, vascular malformations and demyelinating diseases.

How much does a Brain MRI cost?

The price of a brain / head MRI is 275€ when performed on a self-pay basis. However, you can also have it done through several agreements, including:

  • ADSE: If the brain / head MRI is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays the copayment of 30€;
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers.
  • Health plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. For a brain / head MRI, the protocol price is 220€.

The price varies depending on the health system or insurance you use.

How is a Brain MRI performed?

The patient is first prepared with the placement of a venous catheter if the scan is going to be performed with contrast. Then, they are positioned lying on their back, with the head stabilised inside a dedicated brain coil to ensure the region remains still.

The exam usually lasts between 30 and 40 minutes.

Earplugs are provided to reduce the perception of noise from the equipment.

The MRI scanner is open at both ends.

What does it detect?

Brain / head MRI can detect:

  • Benign or malignant brain tumours;
  • Strokes, haemorrhages or ischaemia;
  • Demyelinating lesions (e.g. multiple sclerosis);
  • Vascular malformations (aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations);
  • Infections, abscesses or inflammation of the central nervous system;
  • Cerebral oedema, hydrocephalus or changes in the subarachnoid space;
  • Degenerative or traumatic conditions;
  • Among others.

When is a Brain MRI indicated?

Brain / head MRI is indicated, for example, in cases of:

  • Persistent or unexplained headaches;
  • Neurological changes such as epilepsy, sensory or motor loss;
  • Suspected primary or metastatic brain tumours;
  • Post-stroke assessment;
  • Suspected multiple sclerosis or other demyelinating diseases;
  • Cerebral vascular abnormalities;
  • Monitoring of known lesions or neurological treatments;
  • Among others.

Preparation and instructions for a Brain MRI

Before having an MRI at NRD, please take the following into account:

Topic Instruction
Exam prescription (paper copy) You must bring the paper copy of the exam prescription with you.
Fasting Most MRI scans do not require fasting. When contrast is needed, fasting for about 3 hours is usually required (this will be confirmed when you book the exam).
Arriving early Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time.
Medication You may take any important and unavoidable medication with a small amount of water.
Metal objects Remove all metal objects (e.g. earrings, bracelets, necklaces, piercings, hairpins, removable dentures, etc.).
Pregnancy Inform the NRD healthcare professional if you are pregnant.
Previous exams / tests / information Bring previous imaging exams, relevant clinical information and recent blood test results.
Glucose monitoring implant Do not apply the implant, as it will have to be removed before the exam.
Make-up Do not wear make-up, as some products may interfere with the exam.
Valve and/or orthopaedic prostheses If you have valve and/or orthopaedic prostheses, bring documentation describing and identifying the material.
Hearing aids Inform us if you use a hearing aid, as it will need to be removed before the exam.
Dental prostheses Inform us if you use a dental prosthesis, as it will need to be removed before the exam. Also let us know if you have dental implants.
Orthodontic appliances Inform us if you have an orthodontic appliance. It may be necessary to perform a compatibility test for MRI.
Pacemakers and implanted devices NRD does not perform MRI scans on people with pacemakers or implanted devices (e.g. cochlear implants). In these cases, the exam should preferably be done in a hospital setting.

Throughout the entire MRI exam, you will be continuously monitored by the NRD imaging technologist responsible for your scan. You will also have an alert system at your disposal that you can activate if needed.

You must remain still during the exam to ensure high-quality images.

The entire NRD team will be available to answer any questions you may have.

After the exam, you can resume your usual daily activities.

When and how will you receive your results?

You will receive your MRI results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or on paper at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take home a CD with the images.

Where can you have a Brain MRI?

MRI scans can be performed at NRD, at the following address:

Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, r/c, 1070 – 060 Lisbon (near Praça de Espanha)

How long does a Brain / Head MRI take?

Around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the protocol and whether contrast is required.

Do I need any special care after a Brain / Head MRI?

No. The exam is safe.
If contrast was administered, it is recommended to stay well hydrated afterwards.

Is a Brain MRI covered by the National Health Service (SNS)?

No. MRI exams are not reimbursed by the SNS.

Are there any risks with a Brain / Head MRI? Is it dangerous?

No. Brain MRI is a safe exam, with no harmful side effects, as it does not use ionising radiation.
Contrast may cause mild allergic reactions, but these are rare.
It is avoided in patients with severe kidney impairment.

What are the contraindications for a Brain MRI?

The powerful magnetic field used in MRI attracts objects containing iron, which may move with considerable force.
Metallic implants in the body can pose a danger because they may move or heat up during the exam. Several conditions are commonly considered contraindications.

You must inform the medical staff if you have any of the following:

  • Pacemakers or implanted devices: cardiac pacemakers or defibrillators, ferromagnetic aneurysm clips, electrodes used in deep brain stimulation, cochlear implants, mechanical heart valves and other metallic implants;

  • Metallic foreign bodies: shrapnel or other metal fragments in the body can heat up or move due to the magnetic field. These must be evaluated beforehand, including tiny metal fragments that may have entered the eye as a result of welding, grinding or accidents;

  • Certain eye implants: some ocular implants with metallic components may pose a risk.

Other situations that may contraindicate the exam include:

  • Known allergy to gadolinium (if contrast is used);

  • Severe renal failure (if contrast is required);

  • Pregnancy;

  • Medication infusion pumps, which may malfunction during MRI depending on the model;

  • According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), some ECG patches and electrodes may cause skin burns during MRI.

This list does not include all possible MRI contraindications. Always discuss any concerns with the healthcare professional supervising your exam.

I am pregnant. Can I have a Brain MRI?

MRI is generally avoided during pregnancy.
If the situation is urgent (subject to clinical judgment), the exam may be considered after 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Is a Head MRI performed with contrast?

Head MRI can be performed with or without contrast.
The decision depends on the clinical indication, assessed by the radiologist.
