What is it?
A bladder ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging examination that allows detailed assessment of the bladder, evaluating its structure and potential abnormalities. It is frequently used to investigate urinary symptoms and monitor various urological conditions.
The procedure uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) that pass through the tissues and create real-time images, allowing precise visualisation of the bladder. It is a simple, safe, painless, and radiation-free procedure.
At NRD, ultrasounds are performed using state-of-the-art Digital High-Resolution Ultrasound equipment, providing highly detailed images. The systems include 3D and real-time 4D imaging, colour Doppler, and panoramic views, enhancing diagnostic accuracy.
High-resolution digital ultrasound consoles allow the use of fully electronic, multi-frequency probes, adapting to the requirements of each examination and ensuring the highest image quality.
How is it done?
The bladder ultrasound is conducted via the suprapubic approach. The patient lies comfortably on a scanning table in a dimly lit room to facilitate image observation.
A clear gel is applied to the lower abdomen to ensure proper transmission of the ultrasound waves. The probe is then gently moved over the skin, capturing real-time images of the bladder, which are displayed on a screen and interpreted by the healthcare professional.
When is a bladder ultrasound useful?
Bladder ultrasounds are commonly requested for patients experiencing urinary symptoms, such as difficulty urinating or a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. They are also indicated for investigating recurrent urinary tract infections, the presence of blood in the urine, or pelvic discomfort.
The examination is also valuable for detecting bladder stones or masses, monitoring patients with chronic urological conditions such as neurogenic bladder, and following up after surgery or other urological treatments. This method provides essential information both for initial diagnosis and ongoing clinical management, supporting more accurate medical decisions.

Preparation for bladder ultrasound
For accurate imaging, it is important that the bladder is full. Patients should drink approximately 1 litre of water about one hour before the examination and avoid urinating until the procedure is completed.
