Hand CT is an imaging exam that allows a very detailed assessment of the bones, joints and adjacent tissues of the hands. It is particularly useful in the diagnosis of fractures, joint diseases and tumour-related changes, and is a fast, safe and accurate test.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Hand CT and what is it for?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hand CT is a computed tomography scan focused on the anatomical study of the hands. It uses X-rays combined with computer technology to generate high-resolution images, allowing analysis of the bone and joint structures in much greater detail than conventional X-rays.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is especially indicated when a more detailed assessment of bone anatomy is required or in cases where plain X-ray does not provide sufficient information.<\/span><\/p>\n

How much does a Hand CT cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n

The price of a Hand CT when performed on a <\/span>private basis<\/b> is <\/span>\u20ac100.<\/b><\/p>\n

However, you can have a Hand CT through several <\/span>agreements<\/b>, including:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • SNS \/ ARS<\/b>: When the Hand CT is performed through the SNS,<\/span> the patient does not pay<\/b> any amount (you must bring the Health Centre prescription);<\/span><\/li>\n

    How is it performed?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Hand CT is performed with the patient lying on a table that slides into a short tunnel (the CT scanner), which is open at both ends. The hand is positioned on the table of the equipment. Images are acquired from different angles, allowing three-dimensional reconstructions of the structures. In specific situations, such as the study of tumours or infections, iodinated contrast may be administered intravenously. The exam has an average duration of 5 to 15 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What does it detect?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    Hand CT is an exam that can detect multiple bone and joint changes, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Recent or old fractures that are not visible on X-ray;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Articular lesions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Traumatic changes of ligaments and tendons;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Bone tumours and soft-tissue masses;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Bone or synovial cysts;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Congenital abnormalities of the hand;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Among others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      In which cases is it indicated?<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Hand CT is generally requested by the physician in situations such as:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • Study of complex or suspected fractures after trauma;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Assessment of chronic pain or joint inflammation without a defined cause;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Diagnosis of rheumatological diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Study of bone tumours or suspected bone infection (osteomyelitis);<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Surgical planning in orthopaedics or hand surgery;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Post-operative follow-up or monitoring of clinical progression;<\/span><\/li>\n

        Hand CT with Contrast<\/span><\/h2>\n

        Hand CT may, in some cases, be performed with intravenous iodinated contrast, especially for the assessment of infections, tumours or inflammatory processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Injection of the contrast may cause a brief warm sensation or metallic taste, which quickly disappear. Fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).<\/span><\/p>\n

        It is essential to inform the team about any known allergies (to medicines, food, etc.), asthma, allergic rhinitis or previous reactions to contrast agents, as these situations may increase the risk of adverse reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

        • Remain still to avoid artefacts on the images;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • In certain exams (for example thoracic, abdominal or pelvic exams), you should follow the breathing instructions given by the NRD healthcare professional.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          When and how do you receive the results?<\/h2>\n

          You will receive the CT scan results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or in paper form at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take the CD with the images with you. <\/span><\/p>\n
