Angio CT

CT angiography (Angio-CT) is an imaging exam that allows the vascular system to be studied with great precision. It is used to assess arteries and veins in different regions of the body, providing essential information for the diagnosis and follow-up of cardiovascular and neurological diseases. It is a fast, safe and highly reliable exam.

What is CT Angiography (Angio-CT) and what is it for?

CT angiography is a computed tomography exam specifically focused on the study of blood vessels. It uses iodinated contrast administered intravenously to highlight arteries and veins, allowing the detection of circulation changes that would not be visible on a standard CT scan.

There are several types of CT angiography, depending on the region being studied.

Types of CT Angiography

  • Cerebral CT Angiography
  • Coronary CT Angiography
  • Pulmonary CT Angiography
  • Abdominal CT Angiography
  • Cervical CT Angiography
  • Peripheral CT Angiography (limbs)
  • Pelvic CT Angiography
  • Thoracic CT Angiography

How much does CT Angiography cost?

The price of CT angiography when performed on a private basis is €270.

However, you may undergo CT angiography through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When CT angiography is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (you must bring the Health Centre prescription);
  • ADSE: If CT angiography is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €25;
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of CT angiography varies according to the insurance you use.
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans. In this case, the price of CT angiography varies according to the health plan you use.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. For CT angiography, the protocol price is €175.

How is it performed?

CT angiography is performed with the patient lying on a table that slides into the scanner. Iodinated contrast is administered intravenously and, afterwards, sequential images are acquired as the contrast circulates through the blood vessels. The exam lasts, on average, between 10 and 20 minutes.

NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which offers sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and efficiency in every exam.

Angio CT

What does it detect?

CT angiography can detect multiple vascular abnormalities, such as:

  • Narrowing (stenosis) of arteries or veins;
  • Complete occlusion of blood vessels;
  • Cerebral, thoracic or abdominal aneurysms;
  • Arteriovenous malformations;
  • Thrombi and emboli, such as in pulmonary thromboembolism;
  • Peripheral circulation abnormalities in the limbs;
  • Post-surgical changes, including assessment of stents or bypass grafts;
  • Among others.

In which cases is it indicated?

CT angiography is usually requested by the doctor in situations such as:

  • Assessment of suspected or known aneurysms;
  • Evaluation of cerebral circulation and stroke risk;
  • Investigation of peripheral arterial disease;
  • Investigation of pulmonary embolism or venous thrombosis;
  • Study of carotid or coronary stenosis;
  • Planning of vascular or endovascular surgery;
  • Post-treatment monitoring of vascular diseases;
  • Among others.

CT Angiography with Contrast

CT angiography is generally performed with intravenous iodinated contrast. For this exam, fasting for 4 hours is usually required (confirmed at the time of booking).

The contrast injection may cause a temporary warm sensation.

Although rare, allergic reactions to contrast may occur. To prevent complications, it is essential to inform the team if you have known allergies (to medicines, foods, etc.), asthma, allergic rhinitis or previous reactions to contrast. These allergies or other allergic conditions may increase the risk of reactions to contrast.

Preparing for CT Angiography

Topic Guidance
Exam prescription (paper copy) You should bring the exam prescription in paper format.
Fasting If the exam is performed with contrast, you must fast for 4 hours. When the exam is performed without contrast, fasting is not required.
Arriving early Generally, you only need to arrive 15 minutes before the exam, except when oral contrast will be used. In that case, you should arrive 1 to 2 hours before the exam (you will be informed at booking).
Previous exams You should bring any relevant previous exams.
Medical history Keep in mind your previous medical history regarding allergies, cardio-respiratory and kidney diseases, and usual medication.
Water If necessary or if you wish, you may drink water.

NRD will provide you with all necessary instructions at the time of booking.

Instructions during the exam

  • Remain still to avoid artefacts on the images;
  • Avoid swallowing during neck exams;
  • Remove jewellery, hairpins, glasses, hearing aids and dentures for head and neck exams;
  • In certain exams (for example thoracic, abdominal or pelvic), follow the breathing instructions given by the NRD healthcare professional.

When and how do you receive the results?

You will receive the CT scan results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or in paper form at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take the CD with the images with you.

Where to have it done?

CT Angiography can be performed at NRD, at the following address:

Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, ground floor, 1070 – 060 Lisbon (next to Praça de Espanha)

Does Angio CT hurt?

No. Angio CT is completely painless.

Is Angio CT reimbursed by the SNS?

Yes. It can be reimbursed by the SNS.

Can I have Angio CT if I am pregnant?

During pregnancy, CT is only performed when absolutely necessary. If you are pregnant, inform the team before the exam.

How long does the exam take?

Angio CT can take about 5 to 15 minutes.

Can I drink water before Angio CT?

Yes. If needed or if you feel like it, you may drink water.

What are the contraindications for Angio CT?

A simple CT has few absolute contraindications. Most limitations are due to iodine contrast and are assessed individually: pregnancy, severe iodinated contrast allergy, kidney failure, thyroid disease, severe asthma/allergic disease, and diabetes treated with metformin (see General CT contraindications).
