The Dental Scan or Dental CT is a Computed Tomography (CT) technique specially developed for dental assessment, allowing the acquisition of images of the upper and lower jaws so that all structures can be analysed. It is also often referred to as Maxillary CT.
What is a Dental CT scan and what is it for?
Dental CT is a computed tomography exam focused on the study of the dental arch, maxillary bones, mandible and adjacent structures. It uses X-ray technology combined with 3D digital reconstruction, providing a precise visualisation of teeth, roots, nerves and bone tissue.
It is a quick, painless and extremely accurate exam, essential for a modern and safe approach in dental medicine.

How much does a Dental Scan (Dental CT) cost?
The price of a Dental CT scan when performed on a private basis is €125.
However, you can have a Dental CT scan through several agreements, including:
- SNS / ARS: When the Dental CT scan is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (it is necessary to bring the Health Centre prescription);
- ADSE: If the Dental CT scan is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
- IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
- Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers.
- Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans.
- Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. In the case of a Dental CT scan, the protocol price is €80.
How is it performed?
During the exam, the radiographer/technician carefully positions your head to ensure accurate images. It is essential to remain still while the images are being acquired. The exam is very quick, lasting around 5 to 10 minutes. It does not cause pain or discomfort.
NRD uses a latest-generation Philips scanner (128 slices), which produces sharp three-dimensional images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and quality in every exam.

What does it detect?
Dental CT allows very detailed assessment of all dental and bone structures of the face, including:
- Impacted teeth and dental malformations;
- Cysts, tumours and bone infections;
- Maxillary and mandibular bone changes;
- Pre-implant and post-surgical assessment;
- Relationship between teeth and neural structures (e.g. mandibular canal);
- Orthodontic and surgical planning.
In which cases is it indicated?
Using dedicated software, Dental CT allows real-size reconstructions, including panoramic views, which enable surgical planning through quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the bone in cases where dental implants are required for oral rehabilitation. It guides the dentist in the safe and efficient placement of implants (angulation, height and thickness).
Dental CT also allows the dentist to determine whether there are any anomalies that may limit or even prevent the therapeutic intervention, by defining the exact location of vital anatomical structures (which often vary between individuals), so that these are not breached.
It also helps to guide the most appropriate treatment, namely in bone remodelling when there is marked bone atrophy, especially in people with long-standing tooth loss.
It is also used in the study of congenital dental anomalies and oro-dental pathology, including tumours.
Dental CT with contrast
In most cases, a Dental Scan does not require contrast. However, intravenous contrast may be used in very specific situations (such as suspected deep bone infection or tumour), as indicated by the referring doctor. When contrast is needed, you must fast for 4 hours. The injection may cause a brief sensation of warmth or a metallic taste. It is essential to inform the team if you have allergies, asthma or previous reactions to contrast agents.
Preparing for a Dental CT scan
| Topic | Guidance |
| Exam prescription (paper copy) | You should bring the exam prescription in paper format. |
| Fasting | If the exam is performed with contrast, you must fast for 4 hours. When the exam is performed without contrast, fasting is not required. |
| Arriving early | Generally, you only need to arrive 15 minutes before the exam, except in cases where oral contrast will be used. In that case, you should arrive 1 to 2 hours before the exam (you will be informed at the time of booking). |
| Previous exams | You should bring any relevant previous exams. |
| Previous medical history | Keep in mind your previous medical history regarding allergies, cardio-respiratory and kidney diseases, and usual medication. |
| Water | If necessary or if you wish, you may drink water. |
NRD will provide you with all the necessary instructions at the time of booking.
You must remain still during the exam.
Sometimes, Dental CT is performed using guides supplied by your dentist. You should inform the radiographer/technician about their placement during the exam.
When and how do you receive the results?
You will receive the CT scan results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or in paper form at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take the CD with the images with you.
Where to have it done?
The Dental CT scan can be performed at NRD, at the following address:
