What is it?
Polysomnography (PSG) or Polysomnographic Sleep Recording – level II and level III sleep studies – aims to assess the physiological and cardiorespiratory parameters of sleep using specific equipment.
PSG is a special recording in which the brain’s electrical activity during sleep is studied, along with signs of breathing, heartbeat and oxygen saturation, among other indicators needed to study the patient’s sleep.
How is it done?
To perform polysomnography with EEG (electroencephalogram), various sensors are placed that record neurological, respiratory, cardiac and limb movement parameters.
This test is carried out on an outpatient basis:
- In the clinic, the equipment is set up and the teaching and preparation for the study is carried out;
- The study is carried out at home;
- The next day, the equipment is picked up by the patient and delivered to the clinic.
For which cases is it indicated?
Polysomnographic sleep recording with EEG (or Polysomnography with EEG) in an outpatient setting may be indicated for evaluation:
- Rhonchopathy
- Breathing stops during sleep (apneas)
- Lower limb movements
- Difficulty staying awake during important tasks (driving)
- Excessive and frequent daytime sleepiness
- Night wakings
It may also be indicated in patients with
- Excess weight
- Cardiovascular diseases (e.g. hypertension)
- Insomnia or suspicion of other sleep disorders
Where to do it?
Polysomnography can be carried out through the NRD: Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, r/c, 1070 – 060 Lisboa (next to Praça de Espanha)
