CT Extremities

The Extremities CT scan (upper and lower limbs) provides a detailed assessment of bones and joints and is crucial in trauma, surgical planning and in the study of osteoarticular diseases.

What is an Extremities CT scan and what is it for?

The Extremities CT scan is a computed tomography examination targeted to the shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, hand, hip, thigh, knee, leg, ankle and foot, depending on the clinical indication. It is often useful for characterising fractures and for post-operative assessments.

How much does an Extremities CT scan cost?

The price of an Extremities CT scan when performed on a private basis is €100.

However, you can have an Extremities CT scan through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When an Extremities CT scan is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (it is necessary to bring the Health Centre prescription);
  • ADSE: If the Extremities CT scan is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of the Extremities CT scan varies depending on the insurance you use.
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans. In this case, the price of the Extremities CT scan varies depending on the health plan you use.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. In the case of an Extremities CT scan, the protocol price is €80.

How is it performed?

The Extremities CT scan is performed with the area to be studied immobilised and positioned to minimise movement, with the acquisition of thin slices and 3D reconstructions.

The exam lasts on average between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the area.

NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

Extremities CT scan

What does it detect?

The Extremities CT scan is an exam that can detect multiple osteoarticular alterations, such as:

  • Occult and complex fractures;
  • Dislocations, incongruities and misalignments;
  • Osteoarthritis and inflammatory erosions;
  • Bone tumours and cysts;
  • Osteomyelitis and infectious complications;
  • Post-operative changes and assessment of implants;
  • Among others.

In which cases is it indicated?

The Extremities CT scan is generally requested by the doctor in situations such as:

  • Trauma with inconclusive X-ray findings;
  • Orthopaedic surgical planning;
  • Chronic pain with suspected structural lesion;
  • Suspected bone tumours/infection;
  • Post-operative and consolidation follow-up;
  • Among others.

Extremities CT scan with contrast

The Extremities CT scan is usually performed without contrast. Intravenous contrast may be used in selected cases (tumours, infection, inflammation). The injection may cause a transient sensation of warmth or a metallic taste. Fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).
