CT of the Foot allows a detailed evaluation of the bones, joints, alignment and adjacent structures of the hindfoot, midfoot and forefoot. It is valuable in trauma, sports medicine and in the study of arthropathies.
What is CT of the Foot and what is it for?
CT of the Foot is a computed tomography scan that provides thin slices and 3D reconstructions of the calcaneus, talus, tarsal bones, metatarsals and phalanges. It is often requested when X-ray and ultrasound are not sufficient to clarify complex injuries.
How much does CT of the Foot cost?
The price of CT of the Foot when performed on a private basis is €100.
However, you can have CT of the Foot through several agreements, including:
- SNS / ARS: When CT of the Foot is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (it is necessary to bring the Health Centre prescription);
- ADSE: If CT of the Foot is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
- IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
- Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of CT of the Foot varies depending on the insurance you use.
- Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans. In this case, the price of CT of the Foot varies depending on the health plan you use.
- Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. In the case of CT of the Foot, the protocol price is €80.
How is it performed?
CT of the Foot is performed with the patient lying on a table that slides into the scanner (open at both ends), with the foot immobilised in an appropriate position. The exam lasts about 5 to 15 minutes and generates high-definition images for detailed analysis.
NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

What does it detect?
CT of the Foot is an exam that can detect structural and traumatic changes in the feet, such as:
- Occult fractures (e.g. calcaneus, Lisfranc) and complex fracture lines;
- Osteoarthritis, osteophytes and degenerative changes;
- Post-traumatic injuries of the hindfoot and midfoot;
- Bone cysts and tumours;
- Signs of osteomyelitis or infectious complications;
- Deformities and structural misalignments;
- Among others.
In which cases is it indicated?
CT of the Foot is generally requested by the physician in situations such as:
- Trauma with persistent pain and inconclusive X-ray;
- Assessment of complex fractures for surgical planning;
- Study of degenerative or inflammatory arthropathies;
- Suspected bone infection or post-operative complications;
- Monitoring of bone healing and surgical outcomes;
- Assessment of flatfoot/high-arched foot deformities and alignment;
- Among others.
CT of the Foot with Contrast
CT of the Foot is, in most cases, performed without contrast. In suspected infection, tumours or inflammatory processes, intravenous contrast may be used. The injection can cause a transient sensation of warmth or metallic taste. Fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).
