CT Shoulder

Shoulder CT is an imaging exam that allows a very detailed assessment of the bone and joint structures of the shoulder. It is a quick and safe exam, very useful in the diagnosis of complex fractures, degenerative diseases and joint injuries, providing complementary information to X-ray and MRI.

What is Shoulder CT and what is it for?

Shoulder CT is a computed tomography scan focused on the glenohumeral joint and adjacent structures. It allows the analysis of bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments and bursae, providing high-resolution images and three-dimensional reconstructions that help in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Shoulder CT is especially indicated when it is necessary to assess bone or joint injuries that are not visible on conventional X-ray.

How much does Shoulder CT cost?

The price of Shoulder CT when performed on a private basis is €100.

However, you can have Shoulder CT through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When Shoulder CT is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (it is necessary to bring the Health Centre prescription);
  • ADSE: If Shoulder CT is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of Shoulder CT varies depending on the insurance you use.
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans. In this case, the price of Shoulder CT varies depending on the health plan you use.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. For Shoulder CT, the protocol price is €80.

How is it performed?

Shoulder CT is performed with the patient lying on a table that slides into the scanner (open at both ends). The arm is positioned appropriately to ensure clear images of the joint. In selected cases, such as suspected infection or tumours, iodinated contrast may be administered intravenously. The exam has an average duration of 10 to 15 minutes.

NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

Shoulder CT

What does it detect?

Shoulder CT is an exam that can detect various joint and bone changes, such as:

  • Complex fractures of the humerus or scapula (shoulder blade);
  • Shoulder dislocations and associated injuries;
  • Rotator cuff injuries and tears of adjacent tendons;
  • Degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis and arthritis;
  • Bursitis and local inflammatory processes;
  • Bone tumours and infections, including osteomyelitis;
  • Congenital or structural abnormalities of the joint;
  • Among others.

In which cases is it indicated?

Shoulder CT is generally requested by the physician in situations such as:

  • Detailed study of fractures after trauma or sports injuries;
  • Assessment of chronic pain or limitation of shoulder movement;
  • Investigation of recurrent shoulder dislocations;
  • Diagnosis of degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis or inflammatory arthritis;
  • Study of bone tumours or suspected infection;
  • Surgical planning in orthopaedics and post-operative follow-up;
  • Among others.

Shoulder CT with Contrast

Shoulder CT can, in specific cases, be performed with intravenous contrast, especially to differentiate tumours, infections or inflammatory processes.

The injection of contrast may cause a brief sensation of warmth or a metallic taste, which disappear quickly. Fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).

It is essential to inform the team about any known allergies (to medicines, food, etc.), asthma, allergic rhinitis or previous reactions to contrast agents, as these situations may increase the risk of adverse reactions.

Preparing for Shoulder CT

Topic Guidance
Exam prescription (paper copy) You should bring the exam prescription in paper format.
Fasting If the exam is performed with contrast, you must fast for 4 hours. When the exam is performed without contrast, fasting is not required.

Previous exams You should bring any relevant previous exams.
Previous medical history Keep in mind your previous medical history regarding allergies, cardio-respiratory and kidney diseases, and usual medication.

NRD will provide you with all the necessary instructions at the time of booking.

Remain still to avoid artefacts on the images.

When and how do you receive the results?
