Pelvic CT

Pelvic CT scan is an imaging exam that allows highly detailed visualization of the organs and structures in the pelvic region. It is a key method in the diagnosis of gynaecological, urological and oncological diseases, as well as in the assessment of traumatic injuries of the pelvis.

What is a Pelvic CT scan and what is it for?

Pelvic CT scan is a computed tomography exam focused on the analysis of the pelvic cavity. It allows the study of organs such as the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, prostate, bladder and rectum, as well as the bones and blood vessels of the pelvis. It is a fast, safe and highly reliable exam for the investigation of multiple conditions.

How much does a Pelvic CT scan cost?

The price of a Pelvic CT scan when performed on a private basis is €120.

However, you may undergo a Pelvic CT scan through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When a Pelvic CT scan is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (you must bring the Health Centre prescription);
  • ADSE: If the Pelvic CT scan is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of the Pelvic CT scan varies according to the insurance you use.
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans. In this case, the price of the Pelvic CT scan varies according to the health plan you use.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. For a Pelvic CT scan, the protocol price is €80.

How is it performed?

The exam is performed with the patient lying on a table that moves smoothly through the scanner. Depending on the clinical indication, iodinated contrast may be administered intravenously and/or oral contrast may be given. The exam lasts between 10 and 20 minutes.

NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

Pelvic CT scan

What does it detect?

Pelvic CT scan can detect several abnormalities in the pelvic region, such as:

  • Gynaecological tumours (uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes) and adnexal masses;
  • Prostate disease, including benign hypertrophy and suspected prostate cancer;
  • Bladder abnormalities, such as tumours, inflammation or bladder stones;
  • Pelvic inflammatory or infectious processes, including abscesses;
  • Changes in the rectum and distal colon, such as tumours, inflammation or perforations;
  • Traumatic injuries of the pelvis, fractures and internal bleeding;
  • Vascular diseases, such as pelvic thrombosis or aneurysms of the iliac vessels;
  • Among others.

In which cases is it indicated?

Pelvic CT scan is usually requested by the doctor in various clinical situations and is often used as a second-line exam after ultrasound or MRI. The most common situations include:

  • Assessment of suspicious pelvic masses detected on previous exams;
  • Study of persistent or acute pelvic pain with no clear cause;
  • Diagnosis and staging of gynaecological, urological or colorectal tumours;
  • Therapeutic planning in oncology (surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy);
  • Postoperative follow-up or monitoring after oncological treatments;
  • Assessment of pelvic trauma with suspected fractures or internal bleeding;
  • Study of complicated pelvic infections, such as abscesses or severe pelvic inflammatory disease;
  • Among others.

Pelvic CT scan with Contrast

Pelvic CT scan can be performed with or without contrast, according to the medical indication:

  • Intravenous contrast: used to study the vascularization of pelvic organs and to differentiate lesions. The injection may cause a temporary warm sensation or metallic taste, which disappear quickly. In these cases, fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).
  • Oral contrast: in certain CT exams, for better visualization/study of the digestive tract (Abdominal and Pelvic exams) and/or if medically indicated, it may be necessary to drink oral contrast. In this situation, you should arrive at the clinic between 1 and 2 hours before the scheduled exam time to carry out the oral preparation (you will be informed at the time of booking). Fasting for 4 hours is required.

It is essential to inform the team if you have known allergies (to medicines, foods, etc.), asthma, allergic rhinitis or previous reactions to contrast agents, as these conditions may increase the risk of adverse reactions.
