Maxillary CT

Maxillary CT is a Computed Tomography (CT) technique specially developed for the study of the upper and lower jaws, allowing detailed three-dimensional images of the bony, dental and articular structures of the face. It is an essential exam in implantology, oral surgery, orthodontics and dental medicine, providing precise and indispensable information for diagnosis and clinical planning.

What is Maxillary CT and what is it for?

Maxillary CT is a computed tomography exam focused on the study of the facial skeleton, with particular emphasis on the maxillae, teeth, mandible and adjacent structures. It uses X-rays combined with 3D digital reconstruction technology, which allows a precise visualisation of dento-maxillary anatomy, including teeth, roots, nerve canals and bone tissue.

It is a quick, painless and extremely reliable exam, essential for a modern and safe approach in dental and surgical practice.

How much does Maxillary CT cost?

The price of Maxillary CT when performed on a private basis is €125.

However, you can have a Maxillary CT scan through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When Maxillary CT is performed through the National Health Service (SNS), the patient does not pay any amount (you must bring a prescription from your health centre).
  • ADSE: If Maxillary CT is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a €16 co-payment.
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP.
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, among others.
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, and other health plans.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. In the case of Maxillary CT, the protocol price is €80.

How is it performed?

During the exam, the radiographer/technician carefully positions the patient’s head to ensure accurate images are obtained. It is essential to remain still while the images are being acquired to guarantee maximum quality. The exam is quick, lasting between 5 and 10 minutes, and is completely painless.

NRD uses latest-generation Philips equipment (128 slices), which produces sharp three-dimensional images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety, accuracy and quality in every exam.

maxillary CT

What does it detect?

Maxillary CT allows highly detailed assessment of all bony and dental structures of the face, such as:

  • Bone changes of the upper and lower jaws;
  • Cysts, tumours and bone infections;
  • Impacted or unerupted teeth;
  • Relationship between teeth and nerve structures (such as the mandibular canal);
  • Pre-implant and post-surgical assessment;
  • Orthodontic and surgical planning of the maxillofacial region;
  • Among others.

In which cases is it indicated?

Using dedicated software, Maxillary CT allows life-size three-dimensional reconstructions, including panoramic and multiplanar views, which are essential for surgical and implant planning. This exam makes it possible to accurately assess bone volume and density, guide the dentist in safe implant placement, and determine the ideal angulation, height and thickness.

Maxillary CT is also used to detect structural anomalies or anatomical variants that may influence surgical procedures, ensuring that vital structures such as nerve canals and maxillary sinuses are not compromised during the intervention.

It is also used to study congenital anomalies and oro-dental pathologies, including infections, cysts and tumours of the maxillofacial region, as well as for planning and post-operative follow-up in bone or reconstructive surgery.

Maxillary CT with contrast

In most cases, Maxillary CT does not require contrast. However, intravenous contrast may be used in specific situations, such as suspected deep bone infection or tumoural pathology, as indicated by the referring doctor.

When the exam requires contrast, you must fast for 4 hours. The injection may cause a brief sensation of warmth or a metallic taste, which quickly disappear. It is essential to inform the team if you have allergies, asthma or previous reactions to contrast agents.

Preparing for Maxillary CT

Topic Guidance
Exam prescription (paper copy) You must bring the exam prescription in paper format.
Fasting If the exam is performed with contrast, you must fast for 4 hours. When the exam is performed without contrast, fasting is not required.
Arriving early Generally, you only need to arrive 15 minutes before the exam, except in cases where oral contrast will be used. In that case, you should arrive 1 to 2 hours before the exam (you will be informed at the time of booking).
Previous exams You should bring any relevant previous exams.
Previous medical history Keep in mind your previous medical history regarding allergies, cardio-respiratory and kidney diseases, and usual medication.
Water If necessary or if you wish, you may drink water.

NRD will provide you with all the necessary instructions at the time of booking.

You must remain still during the exam.

Sometimes, Maxillary CT is performed using guides supplied by the dentist. You should inform the radiographer/technician about their placement during the exam.

When and how do you receive the results?

You will receive the CT scan results within up to 7 days after the exam, by email or in paper form at the clinic. On the day of the exam, you will take the CD with the images with you.

Where to have it done?

Maxillary CT can be performed at NRD, at the following address:

Avenida Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, nº 11-B, r/c, 1070 – 060 Lisbon (next to Praça de Espanha)

How are Maxillary CT results provided?

Images are delivered in digital format so they can be used in dental implantology software, and also on film. Every exam includes a medical radiology report.

Does Maxillary CT use radiation?

Yes, it uses ionizing radiation, but not in a significant amount.

Does Maxillary CT hurt?

No. It is completely painless.

Is Maxillary CT reimbursed by the SNS?

Yes. It can be reimbursed by the SNS.

Can I have a Maxillary CT if I am pregnant?

During pregnancy, CT is only done if absolutely necessary. Inform the team if you are pregnant.

How long does the exam take?

Maxillary CT typically takes 5 to 10 minutes.

What are the contraindications for Maxillary CT?

Same as General CT contraindications, mostly related to iodinated contrast.
