CT Neck

Neck CT scan is an imaging exam that allows highly detailed visualization of the structures in the cervical region. It is essential for the assessment of masses, lymphadenopathy, upper airway changes and tumours, and is a fast and accurate technique.

What is a Neck CT scan and what is it for?

Neck CT scan is a computed tomography exam focused on the anatomical study of cervical structures, including the soft tissues of the neck, such as muscles, glands, lymph nodes and airways, as well as bones, cartilages and ligaments.

Neck CT scan is one of the preferred methods for the initial diagnosis of diseases in this region, due to its high resolution and rapid image acquisition.

How much does a Neck CT scan cost?

The price of a Neck CT scan when performed on a private basis is €120.

However, you may undergo a Neck CT scan through several agreements, including:

  • SNS / ARS: When a Neck CT scan is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (you must bring the Health Centre prescription);
  • ADSE: If the Neck CT scan is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €16;
  • IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
  • Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of the Neck CT scan varies according to the insurance you use.
  • Health Plans: Medicare, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, Continente Wells, ACP, other health plans. In this case, the price of the Neck CT scan varies according to the health plan you use.
  • Protocols: NRD has protocols with several clinics and institutions that allow you to undergo the exam at very competitive prices. For a Neck CT scan, the protocol price is €80.

How is it performed?

Neck CT scan is performed with the patient lying on a table that slides into the CT scanner. Depending on the clinical suspicion, iodinated contrast may be administered intravenously to better highlight the vessels and tissues. The exam usually lasts around 10 to 15 minutes.

NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

Neck CT scan

What does it detect?

Neck CT scan can detect a wide variety of structural and functional changes in the cervical region, allowing assessment of soft tissues, bones and blood vessels. With high definition, this exam can identify:

  • Benign or malignant neck masses, including tumours of the larynx, pharynx and oesophagus;
  • Lymphadenopathy and enlarged lymph nodes associated with infections, inflammation or oncological disease;
  • Thyroid diseases, such as goitre, thyroid nodules or suspected thyroid carcinoma;
  • Diseases of the salivary glands (parotid, submandibular), including stones (sialolithiasis) and tumours;
  • Traumatic injuries of the neck, such as cervical vertebral fractures, haemorrhage and haematomas;
  • Inflammatory or infectious changes, including complicated pharyngitis, tonsillitis with peritonsillar abscess or deep cervical abscesses;
  • Vascular narrowing or abnormalities, such as jugular vein thrombosis or carotid dissection;
  • Among others.

In which cases is it indicated?

Neck CT scan is usually requested by the doctor when there is a need to study structural changes in the cervical region or to investigate persistent symptoms. It is commonly requested in situations such as:

  • Assessment of nodules or lumps in the neck without a defined diagnosis;
  • Study of cervical lymphadenopathy, especially when suspected of infectious or oncological origin;
  • Diagnosis and staging of tumours of the larynx, pharynx, cervical oesophagus and salivary glands;
  • Assessment of thyroid disease, including suspicious nodules or compressive masses;
  • Investigation of chronic neck pain, difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or voice changes (dysphonia);
  • Study of complex inflammatory or infectious processes, such as deep cervical abscesses;
  • Assessment of cervical trauma after accidents, falls or assaults;
  • Surgical planning in ENT, head and neck surgery or vascular surgery;
  • Monitoring of oncology patients after surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy;
  • Among others.

Neck CT scan with Contrast

Neck CT scan is often performed with intravenous contrast, as this allows better tissue differentiation and vessel enhancement, which is essential for the diagnosis of tumours, inflammation or lymphadenopathy.

The contrast injection may cause a brief warm sensation or metallic taste, which quickly disappear. In these cases, fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).

It is essential to inform the team if you have known allergies (to medicines, foods, etc.), asthma, allergic rhinitis or previous reactions to contrast agents, as these situations may increase the risk of adverse reactions.

Preparing for a Neck CT scan
