CT of the Wrist allows highly accurate evaluation of the carpal bones, radius, ulna and adjacent joints, and is very useful in complex wrist fractures and in surgical planning.
What is CT of the Wrist and what is it for?
CT of the Wrist is a high-resolution computed tomography scan of the radiocarpal and carpometacarpal complex. It is often requested when there is suspicion of an occult scaphoid fracture, intra-articular fracture lines and for post-traumatic assessment.
How much does CT of the Wrist cost?
The price of CT of the Wrist when performed on a private basis is €100.
However, you can have CT of the Wrist through several agreements, including:
- SNS / ARS: When CT of the Wrist is performed through the SNS, the patient does not pay any amount (it is necessary to bring the Health Centre prescription);
- ADSE: If CT of the Wrist is performed through ADSE, the patient only pays a fee of €14;
- IASFA, ADM GNR, SAD PSP;
- Insurance companies: Médis, Multicare, Advance Care, Allianz, Saúde Prime, Future HealthCare, SS CGD, SAMS Quadros, SAMS, Montepio, RNA, Generali, Mudum, MGEN, Aegon, Vitória, Una Seguros, other insurers. In this case, the price of CT of the Wrist varies depending on the insurance you use.

How is it performed?
CT of the Wrist is performed with the limb immobilised on the scanner table, acquiring thin slices and 3D reconstructions. The exam lasts on average 10 to 15 minutes and is painless for the patient.
NRD has a latest-generation Philips 128-slice scanner, which provides sharp images with a low radiation dose, ensuring safety and effectiveness in every exam.

What does it detect?
CT of the Wrist is an exam that can detect several bone and joint changes, such as:
- Occult or complex fractures of the scaphoid and carpal bones;
- Intra-articular lesions and carpal instabilities;
- Osteoarthritis, chondral loss and degenerative changes;
- Bone cysts, tumours and post-traumatic sequelae;
- Osteomyelitis and inflammatory processes;
- Anatomical variations relevant for surgery;
- Among others.
In which cases is it indicated?
CT of the Wrist is generally requested by the physician in situations such as:
- Trauma with persistent pain and inconclusive X-ray;
- Surgical planning for wrist bone fractures and osteosynthesis;
- Suspected avascular necrosis of the scaphoid;
- Study of degenerative or inflammatory arthropathies;
- Suspected bone infection or tumoural mass;
- Post-operative follow-up and assessment of bone healing;
- Among others.
CT of the Wrist with Contrast
CT of the Wrist is usually performed without contrast. Intravenous contrast may be used in selected cases (infection, tumours, inflammation). The injection may cause a transient sensation of warmth or metallic taste. Fasting for 4 hours is usually required (you will be informed at the time of booking).
